Freezer efficiency depends on the size and
type of freezer. Chest freezers (top loading) are 10-25% more efficient than
uprights (front loading) because they are better insulated and air doesn't
spill out when the door is opened. Manual defrost models consume 35-40% less
energy than comparable automatic defrost ones, but periodic defrosting to keep
ice build-up less than 1/4 inch is necessary to ensure energy efficiency.
Federal law requires that EnergyGuide labels
be placed on all new freezers. These labels are bright yellow with black
lettering. When you're shopping for the best buy in a new appliance, using
EnergyGuide labels can save you money.
